Let me introduce myself; my name is Myra, I’m a lawyer and mother of twe sons Just (3) and Quinten (1,5). I live in Amsterdam, with my boyfriend and two kids. Regularly I go out with the boys on friday, my day off. Of course my boys are super sweet ;) but also real boys who make a lot of noice, knocking over things, making a mess and want to run around. So you can assume that wherever I’m going and whatever I’m doing is in any case “kids proof”!
My tip: Huygens’dok. This café-restaurant is in Watergraafsmeer, on a small square along the Middenweg (the Helmholtzstraat), above the Albert Heijn. You can take the elevator or the stairs. Once upstairs, you enter a large room with cosy couches and tables. It’s a bit of a search when you meet there with a group of friends, but once you get there Huygens’dok is a relief in the city.
No matter how nice, the little cafes and restaurants in the city centre make me feel cramped with kids. The kids can’t walk around without knocking over three glasses with a bumb on their heads from a table side and annoyed looks from other customers. None of that at Huygens’dok. This café is very spacious, with a high ceiling, large windows and a great playing-table for the kids. There are enough delicious things for yourself and for the kids for lunch and dinner and at reasonable prices. You can gain your breath from all the rush, with good coffee and nice sandwiches while the kids can enjoy themselves with the available toys and playing-cubes. There are baby-chairs present. Only disadvantage is the open stairs, so a bit of attention needs to be paid. The stairs however, are far away from the kidscorner, so if you position yourself a bit strategically this doesn’t have to be a problem…
I was here in the summer as well with a large group of friends and kids, when the large sliding doors at the front were open so we felt like we were sitting on the terrace with a view on the square.
A real recommendation if you want to meet a group of friends with (or without) kids for a cup of coffee, a drink, lunch or dinner!
