Let me introduce myself; my name is Myra, I’m a lawyer and mother of twe sons Just (3) and Quinten (1,5). I live in Amsterdam, with my boyfriend and two kids. Regularly I go out with the boys on friday, my day off. Of course my boys are super sweet ;) but also real boys who make a lot of noice, knocking over things, making a mess and want to run around. So you can assume that wherever I’m going and whatever I’m doing is in any case “kids proof”!
It’s not Amsterdam’s best kept secret, so you gotta be in the mood for a crowd, but the Kinderkookkafe (means something like childscookingcafe) is absolutely worth a visit. It’s in the Vondelpark, at the Overtoom, just past the Melkhuis and opposite the Tennisclub. In the Kinderkookkafe the kids are cooks and the parents are customers and how Just loved it!
The Kinderkookkafe is open every day from 10.00 till 17.00 for all kids and the idea is ‘self service’. At the ‘help-yourself-bar’ there are some pictures of dishes the kids can make themselves, for example cookies, pizza or sausage-animals. Once the choice has been made (Just; cake and Quinten; cookies) the collecting starts. All the ingredients are there, the kids can decide what they need from a picture.
And then: let’s go! Cutting, kneading, rolling, spilling and messing about and nobody to correct them; that’s paradise of course… And the greatest thing is that they can eat everything too! For Quinten it was a bit hard to give up on his cookies that had to go into the oven! But luckily after only 10 minutes he could already eat them and the tears were gone. Cleaning up is part of the job. While the kids wait there are enough toys and there’s a slide. During the summer you can also sit and play outside, which is great of course!
For the parents it’s self service too so you can enjoy a cup of coffee while looking at the kids enjoying themselves! You can have kids parties in the Kinderkookkafe and there is a connection with daycare. The prices are very reasonable, coffee for €2,- and a set of cookie-baking €2,20.
