Evelien is mommy of Piet (2010), Tycho (2012) and pregnant with her third child (a girl!) and lives with pleasure with husband and kids in Amsterdam. She loves to discover places where the kids can freely move and play and where it looks and feels good for the parent(s) as well, because that can be a challenge sometimes. Luckily there are increasingly more places where this combination is a match. In the coming blogs she will share her findings with you guys.
Strand Zuid (Beach South) has been on the edge of the Beatrixpark and the RAI for a couple of years. On the waterfront, so you can go there by boat too. Every year they change (read: improve) it! Since May 1st they’re open for the Summer season and recently I went there with Piet and Tycho, a bit insecure though if it would be okay with kids. To be sure I brought some spades and buckets, knowing there would at least be sand.
While I was parking my bike at the entrance, I heard kids laughing which was a good sign. Running through the sand, playing with a bal at the beachvolleyball-field and jumping on the big cushions was a party. And I could read a magazine in the sun (yay!).
This year the restaurant is bigger than last year and they are focused more on the beer culture and for the interior they were inspired by beachrestaurants from all over the world. And it worked! The small lights, the palm trees, beachbeds and fatboys/hammocks give you the feeling that you’re in a totally different place than in the middle of the city.
You have to keep an eye on the water ofcourse, but it’s a great spot, also for drinks with friends and the kids.
You find Strand Zuid at Europaplein 22 in Amsterdam.
